Programs
MiVastApplication (MVA)
What it is -The MVA is the main programme that SakhiKamva was built on. This takes place every year from June to July 2021.
MVA consist of three phases, but for purposes of this proposal, we will focus only on Phase 1. Phase 1 is where all the magic happens for SakhiKamva and its various stakeholders.
What & HOW we do it is We target three regions each year, which will be made of about 15 different schools (approx.) ~ 700 students. We partner with different institutions and programmes that offer funding for students and provide 1-on-1 career guidance and discuss any problems that the student might be facing at school and anywhere else that may help the student succeed, with the help of our volunteers and other partners.
After, we collect all student data and necessary documents via our database to later process applications for each student, for funding and tertiary. This can only be done with the permission of a student. A follow up process (Phase 2 and 3) on how to proceed if accepted or rejected the begins from there.
Why we do this is our experience as students who are from such conditions but better than most of those students. We struggled getting university placement, not to mention the funding for the university studies, ranging between R40 000 to R200 000 per year. We then decided to help the disadvantaged to take advantage
DATES: June - July 2021
The Challenger
(Still in the pipelines)
As mentioned before, we aim to bring opportunities where they are needed most. Most, in not all our students do not have access to motivating and encouraging tools such as the well-known MINTEK Quiz; SASSTA Debating competitions, to mention a few.
We have therefore established a game, that will help address such problem, while simultaneously boosting their entrepreneurial (socia-economically) skills.
The programme will commence in February/March of 2023 and will aim to focus on all streams of studies but, starting with Commerce and Science. It will tackle topics that are of concern in at the current moment in South Africa.
We hope to partner with programmes and organisations such as National Research Fund (NRF), Eskom, the Department of Energy and the Department of Higher Education, Science & Technology for the Science stream; while we aim to bring on board Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, Moshal Scholarship programme and other interested companies for the Commerce stream.
The Education Development Unit
(Still in the pipelines)
In June/July of 2019, during our MVA season, most of our volunteers noted how unfavourable students’ marks were, regardless of the winter schools that the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has arranged. They noted a redundancy on the DBE programme – how it is just changing the teaching stuff but not the methods used in regular classrooms.
This encouraged them to establish a learning programme that will address these issues with the hope of bettering the marks. The key principle of this unit is to minimise class number to maximum individual student attention by the tutor, while lowering tutor age to be peers. “Most of students, including myself, absorb more information when a peer teaches; because of the inspiration I get”. These are the words of one of the volunteers who assisted in the establishment of the EDU.
This programme is also set to commence in June of 2023.
